Complex Trauma & Abuse
Complex trauma often results from prolonged or repeated exposure to abuse, particularly during childhood. This can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, as well as neglect, family violence, or growing up in a chaotic or dysfunctional environment. Unlike a single traumatic event, complex trauma typically involves ongoing, interpersonal experiences where the trauma is intentional and planned, often occurring in relationships where there is an expectation of safety.
The impact of complex trauma is cumulative, affecting not only your emotional well-being but also your ability to form trusting relationships and feel safe in the world. Survivors may struggle with intense emotions, difficulty regulating feelings, low self-esteem, and a deep sense of shame or worthlessness. The effects of this kind of trauma can extend far beyond the original events, influencing your thoughts, behaviours, and relationships long into adulthood.
In therapy, we can work together to gently unpack these painful experiences in a safe, supportive environment. By exploring the patterns and coping mechanisms you’ve developed, we can help you process the trauma and work towards healing, self-compassion, and reclaiming a sense of control over your life.
